Texas Instruments, Inc. (TI) today introduced digital isolation and delta-sigma modulator families that offer reinforced isolation to help protect electronic equipment from high line voltages. The ISO7842 family provides the industry’s highest immunity reinforced isolators and the first to withstand an isolation barrier with a working breakdown voltage of 1,500 Vrms for a minimum lifetime of 40 years. The AMC1304 delta-sigma modulator family offers best-in-class precision performance and the lowest power consumption with reinforced isolation for current shunt monitoring.

Manufacturers of factory automation, motor control and other industrial equipment are integrating more advanced electronics to reduce power and increase efficiency and system intelligence, driving data rate requirements higher and raising the bar on system performance. TI’s new devices offer robust, high-speed, high-performance reinforced isolation to meet critical functional and safety isolation requirements for applications exposed to potential high voltage breakdowns, while providing decades of reliability with precision analog performance and high immunity for noisy industrial environments.

Key benefits of the AMC1304 family include: Leading precision performance: The offset error maximum of 150 microvolts and gain error of ± 0.3 percent is the industry’s best dc performance. With the lowest thermal drift specification, the devices ensure high accuracy over the entire operating temperature range of -40 C to 125 C. Industry-leading ac performance allows motor control designers to minimize distortion and noise. Lowest power: The industry’s lowest power dissipation (maximum 7 mA, primary, and 5 mA, secondary side), together with a 50-mV input voltage range, reduces overall system power consumption by up to 80 percent. Simpler system design: Four AMC1304 delta-sigma modulators are the industry’s first to integrate a low-dropout regulator (LDO), allowing designers to connect the modulator to an unregulated supply voltage. When paired with TI’s C2000 Delfino TMS320F2837x and TMS320F2807x microcontrollers (MCUs) with integrated modulator interfaces and sinc filters, the AMC1304 can boost system performance by precisely and efficiently acquiring multiple analog signals. High-voltage isolation protection: The devices deliver reinforced isolation of 7,000 V, peak, surge voltage of 10,000 V, and working voltages of 1,000 Vrms and 1,500 Vdc. They are UL Recognized Component to UL 1577 and certified to DIN V VDE 0884-10.
TI support, including hardware evaluation kits and reference designs from the TI Designs library, speeds time to market for designers using the ISO7842 and AMC1304 families. The isolated current shunt and voltage feedback reference design (TIDA-00171) implements the AMC1304 delta-sigma modulator and the C2000 TMS320F28377D Delfino MCU. This design is being demonstrated this week in a motor control application at the electronica 2014 Trade Fair, Hall A4, Booth 420. The four-channel ISO7842 is the first in a reinforced digital isolator family that will include quad-, triple-, dual- and single-channel devices. The ISO7842 is available today in production quantities and additional devices will be available in 1Q 2015. The AMC1304M25 with integrated LDO and CMOS interface and AMC1305L25 delta-sigma modulators are the first of seven devices, which will support inputs ranging from ±50 to ±250 mV. The AMC1304M25 is available for sampling Nov. 18, with production quantities of all devices planned for early 2015. The devices are offered in a SOIC-16 DW package.
